Advice For A Successful Music Release
I recently made a post online asking musicians of all kinds what are some things that seem to stump them when it comes to their marketing and releases. After reading through many, I put together this short list of advice that can be useful as your own guide to build from. There really is no exact right answer when it comes to marketing in my opinion. What works perfect for one might not work at all for another but a general plan to adjust accordingly again, I hope will help!
- Define Your Goal- First off you need to sit down and define your goal(s) at hand for the release. Are you looking to gain views, clicks, new fans, song sales, playlists. Each sector has its own respective focus and needs in order to properly service all the outlets. Not that all are not important but I find personally that choosing your top 1–3 outlets that have the most fans or current engagement to place further focus on and letting the others gain natural growth until you have the resources to serve them as well. If you want to run ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, discuss in advance the spend and timing of the ads to run. Try starting with 14 days and adjusting from there.
- Upload at least 30 days in advance- With over 20,000 new songs uploaded roughly per day anymore. Having time for your song and metadata to properly distribute through the system is critical. Ensure you have lyrics entered, songwriters, producers in your backend so everyone is properly credited. Ask your music distribution company to provide a pre-save link for the release and engage your fans to save the track. It also does not hurt to ask them if they can help you submit to Playlist Curators. As the Artist ensure to submit as well directly on your Spotify for Artists profile.
- Prepare Content in Advance with a Schedule- As content and consistency is one of the most extremely important elements when it comes to releasing new music or videos. Having a handful of photos or video clips to showcase the effort briefly to your audience while opting someone to click on your link is important. Changing the photos or posts out at least every 5–7 days when running ads is what I personally find the most useful.
- Define What You Want from the Fan- Just because you release a song, video, album, etc it does not mean it’s automatically “important” to a current fan or even a potential new fan to watch or click on the link at hand. If you are trying to sell a Merchandise item. Utilize content that showcases that. If you are trying to gain video views, showcase content that encourages doing so.
- Adjust Accordingly- You will find in time that you can adjust your ads and targeting as well as how you phrase your posts and content to best suit your audience. However, don’t get comfortable and content. Stay current to trying new content styles eventually, color schemes, and more. Keep in mind what works, for one thing, might not always work exactly the same for another. But you can always utilize the general guide that did work as your starting point.
- Consistency To Your Audience- One of the most important things to myself personally again would be providing consistency in posting, phrasing, and personality so to speak with your audience. They as fans want to know you or your group beyond just constant music posts and sales pitches. Don’t be afraid to stay engaging and showcasing the behind the scenes and lifestyle parts that come with creating as well. The worst thing you can do is build a strong engagement only to not post for weeks on end and almost instantly lose those who were invested in your brand.
